Front Cover:
This cover represents the gold standard for what science fiction covers should look like. I love this kind of artwork. Just noticed it's by Boris. I should have known. It doesn't get better than Boris.Back Cover:
Wealth . . . or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are pre-programmed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. Some came back with discoveries which made their intrepid pilots rich; others returned with their remains barely identifiable. It was the ultimate game of Russian roulette, but in this resource-starved future there was no shortage of desperate volunteers. (I got this blurb from FantasticFiction.com)Review so far:
23-September-2019:For some reason, after all these years, I thought I had already read this book. This book came out in 1977. 8-tracks were still being used in cars. I was ten years old. Things have advanced a lot since then. I don't seem to remember most of the books I've read, so after reading 20% it came as no surprise I hadn't read it before because it has been very unmemorable. I usually will remember I've read a book after reading about 20% or so. This story rang no bells in my imperfect memory.
I have stopped reading this today because I feel like my time is too valuable to be spent reading something I cant get into. I'll come back to it later.
