My First Book Review: Alex Armstrong: Awakening

-----About the book:

Alex Armstrong: Awakening
by Hayes Farley

Alex Armstrong is definitely not telekinetic.

But he will be. And all it takes is a little red pill.

Welcome to Pal Tech, the top-secret school for kids with latent telekinetic powers. Like the other freshmen, Alex was recruited sixteen years ago, when neonatal scans revealed his capacity for telekinesis. Now that he’s of age and his powers are ripe for unlocking, he can begin his training.

Alex excels. Whether he’s navigating a mock Star Wars Trench Run in lab class, crushing his friends in a game of no-hands basketball, or dodging a paintball-shooting helicopter drone during his Simtest, Alex makes telekinesis look easy.

Pal Tech’s president takes notice, moving Alex out of the simulation rooms and into field work with the upperclassmen. His first assignment: join the juniors as they oversee the school’s latest diamond shipment.

But somebody talks, and what should have been a routine delivery gets intercepted by a rogue telekin—a rogue telekin who’s already murdered two senators in his quest to kill Pal Tech’s founders.

With the other students scrambling to survive, Alex must stop the telekin before he causes any more destruction. There’s just one problem: The bad guy can fly.

-----End

This is my first review so this review format will change.  It is perhaps 6 months since I read this book, so my recollection isn't as strong.  Here is what I remember:
This book was easy to read, and I liked the story enough to try to find the next book in the series, but it looks like the author isn't going to do anymore.  I am not heartbroken.  The story was compelling enough for me to read it in two days.
The more I think about it the more I remember how implausible the non-fantasy elements were.  Diamond shipments?  Really?
Nevertheless, I did read it fast and was looking for the next one... I wish he would finish the series.
The cover of the book is average for the 2010's.  Very generic.  It looks like someone did this in Photoshop in about an hour.  This didn't detract from me reading it.  There are some covers that are so cheesy I won't even think about reading the book.

-----Rating

Note: my rating system is based on these assumptions.

1.             The best book I have ever read is a ten.  There can be only one ten.
2.             Book 'goodness' should follow a bell curve, so most books would be rated between 4-6.  Statistics!  That's just how it works.  Recently, self-publishing has altered that curve and has pushed the bell hump to make non-self-published books better than the self-published.  The average book rating shifted to 5-7.
3.             My ratings are 0-10.  10 being the best.  Most did-not-finish (DNF) books are 0 (zeros).  Some DNF books are okay it's just I wasn't in the mood to finish them
4.             Individual items rated: Characters, story, perspective, writing and my feelings while I was reading.

6 - Characters. Average characters.  I wouldn't say cliché but maybe I should.  They were mainly stock, but I liked them.

6 - Story. Average.  Nothing new. Mostly flowed well.  I did read it fast.
10 - Perspective.  Third person.  My favorite.  There is no better perspective than third.  Nuff said.
5 - Average writing.  I don't remember anything that stuck out.
6 - My Feelings.  I liked the book overall.  There wasn't anything new here, but everything seems to mesh and flow right even if there were a few juvenile parts.
Overall rating: 6
I recommend this book especially if you are in your teens and male and if my information is correct and the author isn't writing anymore, and you don't mind...  I don't remember a big cliffhanger at the end, so this is kind of like a standalone novel.
